Now, before I break this method down for you let me share a quick backstory to explain where this method was inspired from.
This method started to take shape in my mind while I was an officer in the United States Air Force. During my time in military service I developed a hungry appreciation for understanding military strategy.
Specifically, I was most fascinated with how military strategy could be used to build online businesses by virtually making any competition in any market irrelevant.
By irrelevant I mean that by employing effective military strategy I could become the only obvious solution in the eyes of my ideal prospects and customers.
My thirst for military strategy led me to study some of the great military strategists to include:
All of my studies helped to inform this new smart method for first time entrepreneurs at some level, but perhaps the greatest impact of all was from a U.S. Air Force Colonel named John Warden III who wrote the book Winning in Fast Time.
It was in this book that I was first introduced to Centers of Gravity thinking.
In the book John and his counterpart Leland A. Russell use the Gulf War as both a model and a metaphor in discussing their ideas around how to create real lasting change inside of an organization.
Much of the book was fascinating to me, but no part more so than the chapter on Centers of Gravity.
Centers of Gravity Example
Here’s a Centers of Gravity example to help bring you up-to-speed on the concept.
In the book John Warden uses a real world challenge military strategists were facing in planning the air assault for the Gulf War.
As the story goes, these planners were wrestling with how to strategically take out Saddam Hussein's power grid during the first night of the invasion.
Without power it would make it safer and easier for Air Force flying missions (often called sorties) who would come in behind the power outage and do their job.
At first the military planners suggested bombing the power plants to cut power.
This was the obvious choice.
*Note. The obvious choice is most often NOT the choice of highest leverage.
The challenge, however, with this option is that it would create power outages in Baghdad for weeks even months while coalition forces raced to reconnect power after taking control.
This would be a PR nightmare and create some serious tension between coalition forces and the local Baghdad populace.
So what did the military strategists do?
The answer was to use Centers of Gravity thinking.
The solution became bombing the electrical transformers instead of the entire power plant.
The transformers were a strategic center of gravity in the power system.
You see destroying the transformers would kill the power and create the same endgame effect.
Darkness and difficulty for Saddam's forces to communicate.
The major difference is that transformers vs entire power plants could be replaced in days rather than months, which would help coalition forces maintain good relations as best as possible with the locals.
This maintaining of good relations with the local populace was a key strategic objective of the war and was made possible because of Centers of Gravity thinking and decisive implementation.
So now that you understand where this Centers of Gravity thinking was born from let's create a working definition that translates to our use in building a thriving online business.

3 Key Building Blocks of Understanding
Building Block #1: What is a center of gravity? It’s the point at which weight is evenly distributed and all sides of an object are in balance.
Building Block #2: Why is a center of gravity important in general? Because it determines the stability of a structure. When a structure becomes unstable it’s because it’s lost its Center of Gravity.
Building Block #3: Why is a center of gravity important in business? Because with limited resources (time, money, energy specifically) it’s easy to get lost in the wilderness of frustration, which then leads to overwhelm and ultimately failure if you are not keyed in on your business centers of gravity with where you are deploying vital resources.
First Principle: Money doesn’t lead in the marketplace money follows value and value is created from innovation.
I’ve borrowed the importance of placing emphasis on a “First Principle Focus” from Elon Musk who said this:
“Don’t just follow the trend. You may have heard me say that it’s good to think in terms of the physics approach of first principles. Which is, rather than reasoning by analogy, you boil things down to the most fundamental truths you can imagine and you reason up from there.” - Elon Musk
Therefore, it’s first principle thinking that empowers us to create a “center of gravity” approach to innovation.
Said another way…
If you’re company is NOT profitable or if it’s losing profit or if you’ve been failing to really get any resemblance of a profitable company started…
... then first principle thinking would argue you don’t have a profit problem you have an innovation problem.
Because innovation is a fundamental truth behind how profits are driven inside any business.
So we can then iterate from there that you have an innovation problem (not a money problem) because you’ve lost your center of gravity around the task of innovation in your business.

Back to the point at hand…
When you lose your center of gravity for innovation your business becomes unstable and you will ultimately fail if you don’t get it corrected.
The Challenge For First Time Entrepreneurs…
The biggest challenge with all of this for first time entrepreneurs is just that…
...you’re a first time entrepreneur.
You don’t know what you don’t know, which is your biggest risk.
Understanding the deep science and the profitable path of implementation behind centers of gravity thinking would be like asking a first year medical student to perform surgery.
Dangerous and highly improbable.
So what’s the solution?
The solution is the 3M component of this new smart model for entrepreneurial success.
These represent the three smart phases of progression and growth for any new entrepreneur.
I would argue that if you’re not currently generating at least 10K per month consistently in your business then you’re going to be operating at the Marketing Protege’ or Marketing Pro level, which will be dependent on your current skill level.
Inside each of these individual phases of entrepreneurial growth we have three more subcategories in the model. It looks like this:
One thing to point out here is that this Centers of Gravity 3M Money Method is a “fractal” model.
What this means is that it builds on itself at each level in this way.
Step 1: You must identify which center of gravity your skill level is dictating you start your business.
The three centers of gravity you have to choose from at this highest level are:
When it comes to Centers of Gravity thinking you must start the thinking process at this level.
Once you identify the level at which you’ll start...
Step 2: You then need to identify the centers of gravity at that level with which you should be investing your resources.

From this point we can then go one level deeper inside of each of those centers of gravity to start identifying action items.
Step 3: Identify action items inside each second level center of gravity
Centers of Gravity Inside Mindset Surgery

It’s a form of self sabotage that is empowered by the EGO.
Centers of Gravity Inside Marketing Strategy
We represent these centers of gravity in a categorical list to show the fact that inside of each of these categories are going to be different centers of gravity based on whether you are operating at the Marketing Protege, Marketing Pro, or Marketing Authority level of this model.

These categories represent the stages each of your prospects and customers are going to pass through as they interact with your business.
As the trust level of your prospects and customers increases with your business they will move from one category to the next starting with promotion and moving through ascension.
The action items inside of each of these 8 categories and your responsibility to those action items will be solely dependent on which stage of growth and entrepreneurial progression you are currently in:
Centers of Gravity Inside Marketing Systems
The types of marketing systems you use in your business are going to be driven by two factors:
Example 1. Let’s say you are operating at the Marketing Protege growth level and you are reviewing the Marketing Strategy center of gravity and then one level deeper the Awareness center of gravity.
In this example as a Marketing Protege you’ll want to simply review only what is happening in the business model you’re operating under at the Awareness stage and how specifically awareness is being created for your prospect.
The Marketing Authority in your business model will ultimately be responsible for building the system that handles this subcategory of Awareness in the Marketing Strategy, but you will at least want to understand what it is.
After all, someday soon you’re going to be the Marketing Authority!
Example 1 Summary:
Example 2. Let’s say you are operating at the Marketing Authority growth level and you are reviewing the Marketing Strategy center of gravity and then one level deeper at the Engage center of gravity inside your business model.
It’s no doubt that one of the engagement centers of gravity for you is going to be email marketing.
So as the Marketing Authority it’s going to be your responsibility to build an email marketing “system” which will then serve as its own center of gravity in your business.
The key takeaway here is this: Understand which stage of growth as an entrepreneur you are in (Protege, Pro, Authority) and then identify what your “One Clear Focus” is in that stage, while being mindful of what’s happening throughout the rest of the business model.
The Centers of Gravity 3M Money Method is a strategic approach to business for first time entrepreneurs placing energy and focus onto the major key parts of your business that will create the biggest impact in the shortest period of time using the minimum amount of resources necessary.
Remember, this is a roadmap of sorts.
If you’re just getting started or have not yet passed the consistent 10K per month milestone in your business then my best piece of advice is to start at the Marketing Protege center of gravity and work your to becoming a Marketing Authority following this Centers of Gravity approach.
As a Marketing Protege you are going to be solely responsible for the Promotion center of gravity inside of the Marketing Strategy center of gravity.
